The ProVision X-Ray body scanner has been chosen for inmate screening in Cook County Department of Corrections (CCDOC) facilities, Illinois.

L-3 Security & Detection Systems announced today that the Cook County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office has selected its ProVision™ Whole-body Imaging System to protect security checkpoints in Cook County Department of Corrections (CCDOC) facilities.

The sale of 10 systems follows a successful trial period during which the ProVision was used at the Cook County Jail’s Level 1 intake facility to screen prisoners for weapons, drugs and other contraband. The CCDOC houses nearly 10,000 inmates and transports up to 1,500 people from local outlying district courts every day.

“Our pilot project resulted in numerous finds of contraband on detainees entering our facility, as well as contraband such as drugs being dumped in the waiting line to enter the machine,” said Daniel Brown, assistant executive director - Administration Cook County Department of Corrections.

ProVision Inmate Screening“The success ofthe pilot project resulted in the Cook County Department of Corrections ordering a body scan machine for each of our 10 divisions.”

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office also purchased L-3’s LX and PX series X-ray systems to screen hand- carried bags, packages and mail.

“Our correctional system faces some unique challenges with regard to screening inmates,” said Thomas Ripp, president of L-3 Security & Detection Systems. “Inspections must be thorough, but throughput is also critical. ProVision helps to balance these requirements while identifying contraband and weapons made of practically any material.”

Inmate Screening with ProVision X-Ray Body Scanner

L-3’s ProVision uses harmless active millimeter wave technology. To help ensure privacy, the inmate screening product generates an image that resembles a fuzzy photo negative with options to blur facial and private areas. Images cannot be stored and can be viewed in a remote location separate from the checkpoint. The ProVision reduces the need for pat-down searches, increases the speed of checkpoint security and makes correctional facility visits safer andmore secure.
