UK PM Brown to Unveil New Anti-Terrorism Measures
Posted by Security Technology News' International Correspondent on 14/11/2007 - 10:14:10
The UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is set to announce proposals to protect public buildings, train stations and other sites against terrorism. Additionally, he is expected to detail plans to create a force controlling the UK's borders; a mixture of visa, customs and immigration workers.
According to Mr Brown, terrorist attacks could occur "anywhere, and from any place".
West Assessed Ways to Boost Security in Public Areas
In light of the attempted terrorist attacks in London and at Glasgow Airport in June/July this year, Lord West, the Security Minister, was asked to investigate means by which security in public areas could be strengthened. These areas included sports stadiums and arenas, shopping centres, airports, train stations, theatres, and many other potential terrorist targets.
It is understood that, with this brief, Lord West has asked architects to integrate anti-terror features into the design of new structures. For example, it is believed that he has called for windows to be positioned with safety more in mind, in order to limit the risk of personal injury from them being shattered by a terrorist explosion.
Barriers, on the other hand, need to be as little in the way as can be achieved and, in general terms, the measures proposed should be implemented with an aim to disrupting everyday life as little as possible, Lord West is said to have added.
Brown Also to Detail UK's New Border Patrol Force
Mr Brown initially detailed the creation of a border patrol four months ago. He is now expected to raise the issue once more in a move to halt the progress into the UK of terrorists, criminals and immigrants.
The new "Eborders" system is expected to make extensive use of technology. Through linking transport industry databases to those of the government, "Eborders" will allow the identification of both valid passengers and those with sinister intent.
In comments provided by Mr Brown to the ‘Sun' publication, he described "Terrorism" as capable of striking "...us anywhere and from any place".
He continued: "But just as the terrorists use every method and the very freedoms we enjoy to kill or maim people, so we must also adopt new tools to beat the terrorists, secure our borders and create a safe global society."
"It is a battle we will have to fight street by street, community by community and year by year. But standing together, resolute and calm, we can win it," Mr Brown stressed.
